Crossovers and SUVs are becoming all the rage. The market for mid-size sedans, resultantly, is as full of competitive options as ever. That's a situation especially true for both ours here in Orchard Park and our neighbors from Buffalo and West Seneca to Cheektowaga and Hamburg.

The Honda Accord vs. Toyota Camry

  • Performance. The new Accord builds in a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four engine, and although it's just behind the new Camry in horsepower, 192 to 203, it's the Honda sedan option that excels in turning and pulling power, 192 pound-feet of torque to Camry's 184.
  • Fuel economy. Accord gets the edge in city and combined mileage per gallon as well as in fuel capacity, 14.8 gallons to Camry's 14.5. That's fewer trips to the pump and more time spent cruising.
  • Interior space. Max passenger volume in Accord weighs in at approximately 105.6 cubic feet compared to its Toyota counterpart, offering but 100.4. That comprehends more front head, leg, and shoulder room and better second-row hip, leg, and shoulder room.
  • Cargo volume. A 16.7-cubic-foot trunk dwarfs that of Camry, at a middling 14.1.
  • Safety. Accord goes big on active features, with the Honda Sensing® technology suite standard throughout the lineup, offering systems for Collision Mitigation Braking and Road Departure Mitigation, warnings for Forward Collision and Lane Departure, a Lane Keeping Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control with a Low-Speed Follow feature, and a Traffic Sign Recognition display. Toyota Camry offers its own standard Safety Sense P (TSS-P) system, but it's far less intensive.
  • Entertainment and connectivity. Accord builds in a 160-watt, four-speaker, 7-inch infotainment system at base, becoming one 180 watts, with eight speakers and an 8-inch touchscreen in higher trims. You can even find a 450-watt, 10-speaker premium audio variant at the top of the line. Plus, in Accord Sport and later, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard to extend smartphone functionality to the dash. Camry offers a choice among four Entune audio systems, offering 7- and 8-inch screen sizes and six- and nine-speaker setups, but none incorporates Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
